The origins of Mobile Gabriel

  1. When did Mobile Gabriel come into existence, and why?

Fr. James Schmitz, a priest of the Diocese of Cleveland (Ohio) first created Mobile Gabriel in 1998. Originally it was meant to provide Fr. Schmitz access to the daily Scripture readings used at Mass. He thought others might find it useful as a way to "keep in touch with the Sacred" during the week, so he kept "enhancing" it and arranged to have it available online. The response was tremendous!
From 1998 through 2006 Fr. Schmitz single-handedly authored the Mobile Gabriel website.

  1. Why is it called Mobile Gabriel?

Gabriel the Archangel is the Patron of Communications since he informed Mary that she was to be the Mother of God. The aim of this channel is allow someone to have access to Catholic material on their mobile device.
